2  How This Book Works

The introduction gives a brief overview of how to think about incentive systems. Each chapter after that will introduce a different way to add to your incentive systems.

This book is designed so that you can follow this process: Identify a action in your product that you want users to take Identify the agent(s) in the action Draw out the incentives you are aware of Identify where the system you have drawn does not match the system you have observed. In other words, where are your users not taking the actions that, according to your incentive diagram, they should be taking?

Start from the Case Studies to understand how incentive systems are put together, then try to represent your own system in this framework.

As case studies, both analog and digital examples of the incentive type will be given.
